Title: Sustainable Land Management (SLM)
Commissioned by: German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
Lead executing agency: Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Ethiopia
In the three Ethiopian highland areas of Amhara, Oromia and Tigray, more than 50 % of the population – approximately 20 million people – live under the constantly rising threat of food insecurity. The reasons are the high population pressure as well as inappropriate land management methods, leading to increasing deforestation, soil degradation and massive soil erosion, thereby contributing to low yields and declining productivity. The effects of climate change as well as unfavorable sectoral, political and legal conditions serve only to exacerbate the situation.
